BHUBANESWAR: The weatherman on Tuesday issued a yellow warning of thunderstorm, gusty winds and lightning in 11 districts for five days from Wednesday due to incursion of moisture from the Bay of Bengal. The India Meteorological Department also forecast light to moderate rain fall and drop in day temperature across the state.
The IMD also advised people to keep a watch on the weather and take shelter during thunderstorm and follow traffic advisories in urban areas.
In the wake of IMD’s warning, the state government issued an advisory to collectors to remain alert and take needful steps. “The districts under yellow warning to keep administrative machinery ready to face any eventuality,” read an advisory from the office of the special relief commissioner.
“Moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal and development of a favourable wind pattern will very likely trigger thunderstorm at several places in the state,” said H R Biswas, head of the regional IMD centre in the city.
He said possibility of thunderstorm would increase in more places in the state in a scattered manner from March 16 to 18. On Wednesday, thunderstorm may occur only at isolated places in selected 11 districts in both coastal and interior pockets, Biswas said.
Former director of the regional IMD centre Sarat Chandra Sahu said thunderstorm and drop in day temperature would likely to continue till March 21.
Sahu said change in weather would be due to combination of movement of upper air trough towards east and flow of moisture into the state from Bay of Bengal in lower level due to southerly and southeasterly wind pattern.
He further said both coastal and north Odisha pockets would witness thundersquall along with hailstorm for three days from March 16.
