Three Arrested In Balangir For Supplying Banned Cough Syrup | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: Police on Friday arrested three persons for supplying banned cough syrup at Khaprakhol in Balangir district. They seized 476 bottles of cough syrup from them.
The accused were identified as Rashmi Ranjan Bariha, Ramesh Barah and Seshadeba Seth. They are suppliers of the syrup while the dealer (procurer) Sunil Putel is absconding. Police have launched a manhunt to nab them. “They are bringing cough syrups in bulk from Cuttack and Bhubaneswar dealers, who bring the huge stock from West Bengal. Since the dealers know that in Balangir belt, there are consumers of cough syrup, they bring the stock only to be supplied in the western district. We have kept a watch on other dealers too,” said Ramakant Sahu, inspector-in-charge, Khaprakhol police station.
The police officer said the cough syrup that is cheap gives a high. “It is in great demand among the youngsters. The cough syrup directly goes to the consumers from suppliers and not routed through medicine stores,” added Sahu.
Recently, police arrested 37 persons and freezed bank accounts of more than Rs 50 crore of two pharmaceutical companies in Haryana and Kolkata for manufacturing and supplying cough syrups.
In the biggest ever seizure, police seized 12, 000 bottles of cough syrup along with a country-made pistol, three vehicles, two motorcycles, 17 mobile phones and Rs 7,500 from the accused.
Police said the tentacles of the cough syrup racket is spread from Himachal Pradesh to Kolkata to Cuttack to Balangir and its neighbouring districts.
