Tamil Nadu: Edappadi K Palaniswami files nomination for general secretary polls; O Panneerselvam terms it illegal | Chennai News

CHENNAI: The leadership tussle in the AIADMK has intensified with interim general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Saturday filing nomination for the election of general secretary. Expelled leader O Panneerselvam, meanwhile, has lashed out at EPS, accusing him of announcing the poll in an autocratic manner.
“A petition filed in the high court against the illegal announcement of the election schedule, in complete violation of the party bylaw, is coming up for hearing on Sunday,” Panneerselvam said. He also shot off a letter to the Election Commission, complaining about the “illegal” announcement and requesting the EC not to make any changes in the election records in view of the pendency of civil suits.
Apart from EPS, 37 cadres too filed nominations on his behalf, but they would be rejected for not meeting the norms as per the bylaw. Talking to reporters at his residence, soon after Palaniswami filed his nomination at the party headquarters, Panneerselvam likened the GS election to pickpocketing. A general council held on July 11 did away with an earlier decision of keeping late chief minister J Jayalalithaa as eternal general secretary and sought to amend the party bylaws by mandating aspirants for the post of general secretary to get proposed and seconded by 10 district secretaries each. “The election commission has not recognised the resolutions that were illegally passed,” the former CM said.
Launching a full-throttle attack on Palaniswami, OPS said the former had resorted to amend the bylaw to get him and his affluent group all positions. EPS was responsible for the party’s continuous defeats in elections and the party’s poor show in Erode East, he charged. “No politician has ever been a supreme dictator in Tamil Nadu. He (EPS) has reached that stage now,” Panneerselvam said. The expelled leader said that Palaniswami had created on his own a “wave of opposition” against him and the recent “emotional” outburst of an individual against EPS at Madurai airport was the mood prevailing across the state. He announced a public rally in Trichy in the second week of April and district-wise tour thereafter to reclaim the party.
On the possibility of Panneerselvam joining hands with V K Sasikala and TTV Dhinakaran, veteran leader Panruti S Ramachandran, an OPS supporter, said it would jeopardize Sasikala’s petition against the general council removing her from the post of general secretary, while Dhinakaran had been steering his own party. “The general secretary election by EPS group is childish as the matter is pending before the court and Election Commission,” he said. Meanwhile, EPS supporter and former minister D Jayakumar said that OPS was an opportunist and lacked support of the cadres.
