SC collegium rejects Justice VM Velumani’s request to reconsider her transfer to Calcutta HC | Chennai News

CHENNAI: The Supreme Court collegium has refused to reconsider its recommendation transferring Justice V M Velumani of the Madras high court to the Calcutta high court.
The collegium has also rejected her request to transfer her to an HC in the Northeast instead of to the Calcutta HC. Justice Velumani made the request so that she can retain her official accommodation in Chennai.
“The collegium by its resolution dated September 29, 2022, proposed to transfer Justice V M Velumani to the Calcutta HC for the better administration of justice. She sought reconsideration of the recommendation. Her request was not acceded to by the collegium. The collegium by a resolution dated November 24, 2022 reiterated the recommendation for her transfer,” a statement released by the collegium said.
As to her request seeking transfer to a state in the Northeast, the collegium said, “The request made by her to retain her at the Madras HC has been rejected by the collegium on an earlier occasion. There is no valid reason to reconsider the earlier decision of the collegium by which her transfer has been recommended to the Calcutta HC or to accede to her fresh request. Her request for transfer to either Manipur or Tripura or any high court in the North-eastern states is rejected.”
