PRAYAGRAJ: Amid slogans hailing the goddess, holding coconuts, bangles and red chunari in their hands, thousands of devotees thronged temples of the Sangam city on Navami (the ninth day of the Chaitra Navratri), on Thursday.
At the culmination of nine days of fasting for Goddess Durga and her nine forms, devotees also celebrated Ram Navami (the birth of Lord Ram) with processions in various localities of the city. Long queues of devotees were seen outside the temples of Kalyani Devi, Alopidevi and Lalita Devi, the latter being one of the 51 Shakti Peeth shrines of the country.
Smaller temples too witnessed heavy rush of devotees the entire day. Idols in all the temples were decorated with colourful streamers and strings of marigold flowers.
At Baghambari Gaddi Math, head priest Mahant Balveer Giri, performed the Kanya Pujan ritual, in which girls were offered obeisance as forms of the goddess.
The Kanya Pujan ritual was performed by devotees too. “I went to the Kalyani Devi temple with my family to seek blessings of the goddess and offered prayers, coconut and chunari there,” said Dheeraj Jaiswal, a resident of Preetam Nagar.
