BENGALURU: Former Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurappa on Thursday denied that the Bommai government meted out injustice to the Muslims by scrapping 4% reservation under category 2B and shifting them to the economically weaker section (EWS) quota of 10%.
“Since the quota was anti-constitutional, we have corrected the mistake by bringing them under the EWS quota. This should not be misinterpreted,” he said. About the Congress promise to restore the quota if the party is voted in, Yediyurappa said the opposition was making false promises.
The Congress is daydreaming about winning the elections. It is best that (Congress leaders) Siddaramaiah and (DK) Shivakumar identify their chairs in the opposition,” he said.
Amid speculation that BJP may field BSY’s son BY Vijayendra against Siddaramaiah in Varuna, Yediyurappa did not rule out the possibility. “Discussions are going on. Siddaramaiah knows he’s on a slippery ground. We’ll give a tough fight with a good candidate,” he added.
Siddaramaiah said he was least bothered about who the opponent is. Shivakumar said his party would welcome even if Yediyurappa fought from Varuna.
On violence in Shikaripura during a protest by Banjara and Bhovi communities, Yediyurappa said the incidents were isolated that occurred in a couple of places. “We’ll try to convince the protesters. The rest of the state has accepted the revised quota matrix wholeheartedly,” he said.
On reports that the defectors from Congress and JD(S) who joined the BJP to help him form the government in 2019 are planning to return to their parent parties, the former CM said most of them will stay. “One or two of them who have realised they will not get BJP ticket may have gone back. Most of them have respect for the party and PM Modi. They will get adequate position within the ranks in the future,” he said.
