Bhubaneswar: Villagers of Indiranagar near Betanati station in Mayurbhanj district on Wednesday protested the closure of a level-crossing gate near their locality. They demanded opening of the gate for easy passage of the people to approach Betanati Bazaar.
A few days ago, Indian Railways closed the unmanned level crossing (ULC) for safety reasons.
“The locals cross the railway line to reach Betanati for daily needs. We had been using this ULC for several years, but the railways has closed this by levelling soil along the line,” said a villager.
We are facing difficulties in approaching the bazaar,” he added.
The locals sat on the railway track and stopped a Baripada-Bhubaneswar superfast train, which was stranded for two hours.
Police and railway officials reached the spot and convinced the villagers to call off the blockade. Later, the villagers left the place after getting assurance from the officials.
The railways has closed most of the ULCs in Odisha.
