Hubballi: Longest Rly Platform Poses Problems To Passengers | Hubballi News

HUBBALLI: SSS Hubballi railway station boasts of having the longest platform in the world. However, this 1,507-metre-long platform has become a bane for passengers, especially senior citizens, children, and physically challenged persons.
Platforms 6, 7, and 8 that are adjacent to the longest platform are not connected with coach watering points. So passengers are forced to walk for about a kilometre to reach the east end. Though the track starts from the Dy SS office end, trains are not being originated from there due to lack of coach watering service and single starter.
As a result, senior citizens are paying Rs 20 for battery-operated vehicles (BOV) to reach their trains. If passengers have some heavy luggage, they must rely on porters and trolleys to move for almost one kilometre.
Laxman Singh Bhorde, a senior citizen in Indraprashta Nagar, Hubballi, said: “If we come through the first entry of the station, there is no clear board directing us to go to platform numbers: 6, 7 and 8. As I am suffering from arthritis, I have to pay Rs 20 for BOV. If trains start and conclude at Dy SS office end, it will be really helpful for us,” he added.
A railway staff member said that many newcomers struggle to reach platform 6. “We observe on a daily basis that many passengers go towards platform 2, 3, 4 and 5, assuming that they can access platform 6 after platform 5. If they ask us, we direct them to go towards South.
Many have been wondering over numbering of platforms in Hubballi, where platform 1 continues with platform 8, while platforms 6 and 7 are adjacent to platform 8,” he added.
Prathibha K, a passenger from Mangaluru said that she had never walked such a long distance of over one km at any railway station of India. “Thanks to this problem, porters and BOVs are earning good money at the station,” she observed.
Hareitha S, senior divisional commercial manager of Hubballi division said: “We must maintain safer distance of 600 metres between dead-end and rakes.
Hence the starter signal is installed 600 mtrs after Dy SS office end. Starter signal is a permanent installation, and it cannot be shifted. However, we have provided a third entry for platform 6, 7 and 8 and have allowed BRTS Chigari buses till this area.
Passengers can board or de-board buses, autos, taxis and their own vehicles at the third entry. It will take some more time for all passengers to know about the third entry. We have put sign boards at the main entrance of first entry and other places in the station.”
