BHUBANESWAR: The state capital will be directly connected to Dubai by air from May 15 as Indigo’s Airbus-320 will operate from here thrice a week. The much-awaited flight will open the gateway to south-east Asian countries.
On Saturday, the sale of tickets started in the wake of Utkal Diwas. Launching the ticket sales at Naveen Niwas, chief minister Naveen Patnaik said, “Connectivity is key to development and it has been a focus area of our government”.
“Direct connectivity with Dubai which is one of the biggest aviation hubs will open up a direct gateway to the world. Not only it will provide seamless connectivity but also will have a huge multiplier effect on investment in the state IT, manufacturing and tourism sectors. This is the aspiration of New Odisha and I am very happy to open ticket sales for the Dubai Flight,” Naveen said.
Naveen handed over the first eight tickets to Mission Shakti women, sportspersons, tribal leaders, skilled-in-Odisha students and artists.
The Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) here has received the flight schedule for the operation. The international terminal building whose makeover was underway will be fully ready much ahead of the operation. “We have received the schedule from the airline. All necessary logistics will be provided for smooth operation,” said BPIA director Prasanna Pradhan.
Government sources revealed that Indigo Airlines recently won the bid to operate direct flights to three important gateways. Inaugural ticket prices have been pegged at Rs 10,000 (one way) Rs 20,000 for a round trip. Each flight will have this subsidised ticket on a first come first serve basis, officials said.
Officials said the international flight will run from here to Singapore and Bangkok within two weeks of the launch of the direct flight to Dubai.
“Direct connectivity to aviation hubs like Dubai, Singapore and Bangkok will give a huge boost to connectivity facilitating travel for investor communities, tourists as well as a seamless and economic travel option to Odia people working in these regions,” a government communication said.
While attending a Make-in-Odisha conclave in Dubai, the CM had assured the investors and Odia diaspora that direct flight will commence easing travel from the Middle East.
Government sources said a big delegation from the state will travel on the maiden flight to Dubai.
