Bhubaneswar: Animal lovers under the banner of Animal Protection Forum of India on Thursday urged the state government to build sanctuaries for stray animals and to engage animal lovers as volunteers for free.
The animal rights campaigners have been staging dharna near the assembly since January 22, which entered the 68th day on Thursday.
Pradyumna Chaudhary, who is leading the protest, said they want the state to frame a law to protect stray animals. “My two pet dogs were kidnapped for 60 days because of a property dispute. When I reached out to the police, they refused to file an FIR saying the animal act is not applicable here,” Chaudhary said.
Then I started doing research on the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and other regulations and felt the need for an amendment of the animal protection laws,” he added.
He said the dogs should be released back to their areas after sterilization. “We have seen these stray dogs are kept in the animal shelters instead of releasing them from where they had been picked up. The animals are not treated well inside the shelters,” he alleged.
