AHMEDABAD: City crime branch arrested eight workers of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for putting up anti-Modi posters in the city on Thursday. Natwar Thakor, Jatin Patel, Ajay Chauhan and Bipin Sharma from Vatva, Kuldeep Bhatt from Maninagar, Arvind Chauhan and Jivan Maheshwari from Vadaj and Paresh Tulsiyani from Naroda were arrested.
The posters were put up in areas like Isanpur, Maninagar, Vatva, Narol and Vadaj. The police filed eight FIRs against the workers under charges of criminal conspiracy and causing damage under the IPC along with charges under the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act.
Police said the accused put up ‘objectionable posters’ against PM Narendra Modi and damaged public property. The posters were mainly put up at AMC kiosks and public places. The AAP Gujarat unit condemned the arrests, saying the action proved their point that “democracy is in danger”.
AAP’s Gujarat vice-president Sagar Rabari said the party had put up such posters in other states but only Gujarat police booked their workers. “Amdavadis are deprived of their constitutional rights because police can arrest and book you according to their whims.”
